How to Start a Blog Online, Step by Step Tutorial

By Mohd Aktar on Tuesday, 21 January 2014
I want to show you guys how to make your own blog online in 10 minutes or less. Here’s an overview of what I’m going to be talking about.

First we’re going to be choosing a platform to use. Second I want to explain what a domain and hosting is, and then third we’re finally going to install our blog. The platform that I usually recommend is WordPress.

Why WordPress?

  • First it’s free and open source.
  • Second, it powers 22 percent of the web.
  • Third, there’s no technical knowledge that you need to use it.

It’s highly efficient. It’s fully customizable, and there are thousands of templates and plugins that can make your own blog unique. The domain and hosting company that I use and recommend is called Bluehost. Why do we need to buy a domain name and hosting? Well, first your domain name is your unique identifier on the internet, and a web hosting makes your website accessible to anyone on the internet.

Why Bluehost?

First, they’ve been in business since ’96. They host millions of websites all over the world. They have unlimited storage, and they have 24/7 support by phone, email and chat.

Let’s get into it.

I want you to click on the first link in the description below. Now we’re at the Bluehost.com website, and what we want to do is click Sign Up Now, and this would take us to a new page that asks for a domain name. We’re going to type in a domain name, which for me it’s going to be Codies OnlineBlog. com.

Click Next, and it takes us to the order form, and here we put in all our details and information. As you can see on the account plan, we have several options to choose from. If you want to save some more money, you can purchase the two-year or three-year contracts, and if you think websites can be getting a lot of traffic, you can purchase one of the bottom three options. This will give you a more powerful server to handle your website. However for this demonstration, I’m just going to be choosing the 12-month plan.

Bluehost offers several different add-ons that you can purchase. I’m just going to go through what they all mean. First off we have SiteLock. It puts a little page on your website that establishes credibility. Site Backup backs up your website. Search Engine Jumpstart helps with your ranking in Google, and Domain Whois hides your personal information. None of these add-ons will be needed for this tutorial. Underneath this, we have billing information where we want to enter our credit card details. After we’ve filled everything in, what we want to do is click Next.

Bluehost takes us to another page, where we have the option to purchase additional add-ons, but for this tutorial, none of them will be needed. Let’s scroll down to the bottom of the page and click Complete. Now we’re at the thank you page, where Bluehost displays all your information. It’s good practice to check over, and make sure that everything is correct. Click on the blue link, you can create your password, and we can move on to the next step. What I want you to do now is go back to the Bluehost.com homepage, and on the top right hand corner, you will find a control panel log in. I’m going to click that.

Now you want to put in your website address and your password you just created a few moments ago. Now we’re on our web server’s home page, and what we want to do now is click on cPanel at the top left, and under Website Builders, we want to click on WordPress. Now we’re being brought to a WordPress install page, and what we want to do is click Start. Now we want to check which website we want to blog on. For me it’s Codies Online Blog. This page shows us terms and conditions that we have to agree to, and above this shows the advanced options. What I want you to do is click that, and then fill in the details.

The site name for me is Codies Online Blog. Then I want to type in my username and password, and my email address at the bottom, and click Install. Let’s give it a few minutes and let it do its thing. WordPress has installed it onto our web server, and now gives us our login details to log into the WordPress backend. The site URL takes us to our actual blog. As you can see, it’s Codies Online Blog for me, and the login URL takes us to the WordPress backend, where we can log in and post content to our blog. All right guys. Now we’ve logged into the backend of WordPress. To make our first blog post, what we want to do is go over to the left, and under Post, we want to go to Add New. Here, it’s pretty straightforward. What we want to do is type in our blog post title.

I hope you like this tutorial. Then in the body of the content, if you have any questions, feel free to leave them below, and I will get back to you. Say you wanted to add an image to your post. What you want to do is go down to the bottom right hand corner, and click on Featured Image.

I will say at this point, you want to upload your image, but as you can see, I’ve already uploaded mine. I'll click it, and click Set Featured Image. We have everything that we need. We have the title. We have our content and we have image.

Click Publish, and you will see our blog post has been successfully posted to the web, and if you want to check it out, click View Post, and there you go guys. That’s how easy it is to make your own blog online. Keep a look out on my channel for future tutorials where I’m going to be showing you guys how to install custom WordPress themes and plugins.
