By Mohd Aktar on Wednesday, 26 December 2012
Jitsi, an open source messenger for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, is a secure open source Skype alternative. It supports SIP, Jabber (including Google Talk), ICQ, AIM, MSN, Yahoo Messenger and Facebook (yes is also XMPP). Features? Group chats, audio, video chat, desktop sharing, and much more . Yes, makes a good impression. Maybe give it try and things like Pidgin or Digsby set aside.

Video calls are directly supported for SIP and XMPP. Compounds, both the video and audio data as well as chat messages are encrypted. Then there is the Secure Real-time Transport Protocol (SRTP) for the transmission and ZRTP for key exchange is used. Chats can using Off-the-Record Messaging is encrypted.

An overview of what support Jitsi everything is here: https://jitsi.org/index.php/Main/Features.

Due to possible concerns about Skype terms of use and operation, and because of the undisclosed protocol, Jitsi is probably an open source Skype alternative.
